Articles (A, An, The)

Articles are small words we put before a noun to tell us which one we mean.

There are three articles in English: a, an, and the.

Use a before words that start with a consonant sound:

  • a cat 🐱
  • a dog 🐶
  • a ball ⚽
  • a book 📚
  • a mango 🥭

Use an before words that start with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u):

  • an apple 🍎
  • an egg 🥚
  • an ice cream 🍦
  • an orange 🍊
  • an umbrella ☂️

A = before consonant sounds (b, c, d, f, g, h…)
