Check and Checkmate ♔⚠️

The goal of chess is to checkmate the opponent’s King. Let’s learn what that means!

⚠️ What is CHECK?

Section titled “⚠️ What is CHECK?”

Check means your King is being attacked by an enemy piece.

When your King is in check, you must do one of these three things:

  1. Move the King to a safe square
  2. Block the attack with another piece
  3. Capture the attacking piece

🚨 You cannot ignore a check! You must deal with it immediately.

The White Rook is attacking the Black King. The Black King is in CHECK!

How can Black escape?

  1. Move King to d7, f7, d5, or f5 (safe squares)
  2. Block by placing a piece between the Rook and King
  3. Capture the Rook (if possible)

🏁 What is CHECKMATE?

Checkmate means the King is in check AND has no way to escape!

When checkmate happens, the game is over — the player who gave checkmate wins! 🏆

Checkmate means ALL THREE are true:

  1. ✅ The King is in check (being attacked)
  2. ✅ The King cannot move to any safe square
  3. ✅ The check cannot be blocked or the attacker cannot be captured

This is a famous 4-move checkmate called Scholar’s Mate:

🤝 What is STALEMATE?

Stalemate is different from checkmate!

Stalemate happens when:

  • The King is NOT in check
  • But the player has no legal move at all

Stalemate = Draw (nobody wins, nobody loses)

💡 Remember:

  • Checkmate = King is attacked AND cannot escape → Win/Loss
  • Stalemate = King is NOT attacked but cannot move → Draw

🌟 Tips for Beginners

  1. Always check if your King is safe before making a move
  2. Look for checks — can you attack the enemy King?
  3. Protect your King — keep it safe, especially in the early game
  4. Castle early — move your King to safety behind pawns
  5. Think before you move — can the enemy capture your piece?
