Electric and Electronic Devices

This page uses a simple school rule first. It is made for a young child.

The easy rule

If electricity mainly makes light, heat, sound, or movement, call it an electric device. If electricity helps it think, remember, show pictures, or control information, call it an electronic device.

Electric deviceElectronic device
Electricity does simple work.Electricity runs tiny control parts.
It may make light, heat, sound, or movement. It may show pictures, store data, calculate, or follow programs.
It does not need a “small brain” to do its main job.It has a “small brain” such as chips or circuits.
Examples: bulb, fan, iron, kettle.Examples: TV, mobile phone, computer, calculator.

For class 1 or class 2, this much is enough:

Electric means electricity does simple work. Electronic means electricity runs a small brain inside.

A battery is a power source. A charger is also about giving power. They do not decide whether the device is electric or electronic.

DeviceUses battery or charging?Correct idea
TorchYesElectric device, because it mainly gives light.
Rechargeable fanYesElectric device, because it mainly moves air.
CalculatorYesElectronic device, because it works with numbers.
Mobile phoneYesElectronic device, because it stores, shows, and sends information.
Battery by itselfYesPower source, not a device category for this lesson.

So do not teach: “battery means electronic.”

Teach: What job is electricity doing inside?

ItemBest answer for a childWhy
BulbElectricIt makes light.
Tube lightElectricIt makes light.
TorchElectricIt makes light, even if it uses a battery.
FanElectricIt moves air.
Table fanElectricIt moves air.
IronElectricIt makes heat.
KettleElectricIt makes heat to warm water.
ToasterElectricIt makes heat to toast bread.
Mixer grinderElectricIt spins and moves blades.
Hair dryerElectricIt makes heat and moving air.
DoorbellElectricA simple bell makes sound.
Electric trainElectricElectricity helps it move.
TVElectronicIt controls pictures and sound.
ComputerElectronicIt works with information and programs.
LaptopElectronicIt works with information and programs.
TabletElectronicIt shows apps, pictures, sound, and games.
Mobile phoneElectronicIt stores and sends information.
CalculatorElectronicIt thinks with numbers.
Remote controlElectronicIt sends commands to another device.
Digital watchElectronicIt uses circuits to show time.

Some modern machines have an electric part and an electronic part. For a young child, say both when needed.

DeviceElectric partElectronic part
Washing machineMotor moves the drum.Buttons choose the wash program.
Microwave ovenElectricity makes heat.Buttons and timer control it.
Smart fanMotor moves air.Remote or sensor controls speed.
Smart TVNeeds electricity to work.Chips control pictures, apps, and sound.

If a school question asks “TV is electric or electronic?”, the best answer is:

TV is an electronic device.

Electric box

Light, heat, sound, movement.

Bulb, fan, iron, kettle.

Electronic box

Pictures, numbers, memory, programs.

TV, phone, computer, calculator.

Use these short lines while teaching:

  • A bulb is electric because electricity becomes light.
  • A fan is electric because electricity becomes movement.
  • An iron is electric because electricity becomes heat.
  • A TV is electronic because it uses electricity and tiny circuits to control pictures and sound.
  • A calculator is electronic because it uses electricity to work with numbers.
  • A battery only gives power. It does not make every device electronic.

Adults also say electrical. It means “related to electricity.”

Use it for words like electrical wire, electrical switch, electrical socket, and electrical safety.

For this lesson, focus on only two boxes:
