Electric and Electronic Devices
This page uses a simple school rule first. It is made for a young child.
The easy rule
If electricity mainly makes light, heat, sound, or movement, call it an electric device. If electricity helps it think, remember, show pictures, or control information, call it an electronic device.
Quick Difference
Section titled “Quick Difference”| Electric device | Electronic device |
|---|---|
| Electricity does simple work. | Electricity runs tiny control parts. |
| It may make light, heat, sound, or movement. | It may show pictures, store data, calculate, or follow programs. |
| It does not need a “small brain” to do its main job. | It has a “small brain” such as chips or circuits. |
| Examples: bulb, fan, iron, kettle. | Examples: TV, mobile phone, computer, calculator. |
For class 1 or class 2, this much is enough:
Electric means electricity does simple work. Electronic means electricity runs a small brain inside.
Battery Or Charger Does Not Decide
Section titled “Battery Or Charger Does Not Decide”A battery is a power source. A charger is also about giving power. They do not decide whether the device is electric or electronic.
| Device | Uses battery or charging? | Correct idea |
|---|---|---|
| Torch | Yes | Electric device, because it mainly gives light. |
| Rechargeable fan | Yes | Electric device, because it mainly moves air. |
| Calculator | Yes | Electronic device, because it works with numbers. |
| Mobile phone | Yes | Electronic device, because it stores, shows, and sends information. |
| Battery by itself | Yes | Power source, not a device category for this lesson. |
So do not teach: “battery means electronic.”
Teach: What job is electricity doing inside?
20 Everyday Examples
Section titled “20 Everyday Examples”| Item | Best answer for a child | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bulb | Electric | It makes light. |
| Tube light | Electric | It makes light. |
| Torch | Electric | It makes light, even if it uses a battery. |
| Fan | Electric | It moves air. |
| Table fan | Electric | It moves air. |
| Iron | Electric | It makes heat. |
| Kettle | Electric | It makes heat to warm water. |
| Toaster | Electric | It makes heat to toast bread. |
| Mixer grinder | Electric | It spins and moves blades. |
| Hair dryer | Electric | It makes heat and moving air. |
| Doorbell | Electric | A simple bell makes sound. |
| Electric train | Electric | Electricity helps it move. |
| TV | Electronic | It controls pictures and sound. |
| Computer | Electronic | It works with information and programs. |
| Laptop | Electronic | It works with information and programs. |
| Tablet | Electronic | It shows apps, pictures, sound, and games. |
| Mobile phone | Electronic | It stores and sends information. |
| Calculator | Electronic | It thinks with numbers. |
| Remote control | Electronic | It sends commands to another device. |
| Digital watch | Electronic | It uses circuits to show time. |
Devices That Can Be Both
Section titled “Devices That Can Be Both”Some modern machines have an electric part and an electronic part. For a young child, say both when needed.
| Device | Electric part | Electronic part |
|---|---|---|
| Washing machine | Motor moves the drum. | Buttons choose the wash program. |
| Microwave oven | Electricity makes heat. | Buttons and timer control it. |
| Smart fan | Motor moves air. | Remote or sensor controls speed. |
| Smart TV | Needs electricity to work. | Chips control pictures, apps, and sound. |
If a school question asks “TV is electric or electronic?”, the best answer is:
TV is an electronic device.
Picture In Your Mind
Section titled “Picture In Your Mind”Electric box
Light, heat, sound, movement.
Bulb, fan, iron, kettle.
Electronic box
Pictures, numbers, memory, programs.
TV, phone, computer, calculator.

Parent Or Teacher Script
Section titled “Parent Or Teacher Script”Use these short lines while teaching:
- A bulb is electric because electricity becomes light.
- A fan is electric because electricity becomes movement.
- An iron is electric because electricity becomes heat.
- A TV is electronic because it uses electricity and tiny circuits to control pictures and sound.
- A calculator is electronic because it uses electricity to work with numbers.
- A battery only gives power. It does not make every device electronic.
Small Note About The Word Electrical
Section titled “Small Note About The Word Electrical”Adults also say electrical. It means “related to electricity.”
Use it for words like electrical wire, electrical switch, electrical socket, and electrical safety.
For this lesson, focus on only two boxes:
| Box | Remember |
|---|---|
| Electric | Light, heat, sound, movement. |
| Electronic | Pictures, numbers, memory, programs, control. |
