Past Simple Tense (Things That Finished)

The Past Simple Tense tells us about actions that finished in the past!

Most verbs just add -ed to make them past tense:

These words tell us it happened in the past:

  • Yesterday - I played yesterday
  • Last night - We watched TV last night
  • This morning - She ate breakfast this morning
  • Last week - They visited grandma last week
  • Before - I finished homework before dinner
  1. Present: I brush my teeth
    Past: I brushed my teeth this morning

  2. Present: She dances in class
    Past: She danced at the party yesterday

  3. Present: We listen to music
    Past: We listened to songs last night

  4. Present: The dog barks loudly
    Past: The dog barked at the mailman

Yesterday was a fun day! I woke up early and brushed my teeth. Then I played with my sister in the garden. We laughed and jumped around. Mom cooked pancakes for breakfast. After that, we walked to the park and climbed on the playground. When we came home, I helped mom with the dishes. It was a great day!

Regular (-ed endings):

  • wanted, needed, liked, loved
  • watched, listened, looked, talked
  • painted, colored, cleaned, worked
  • smiled, laughed, cried, hugged

Fill in the past form:

  1. I _____ (play) with blocks → played
  2. She _____ (paint) a picture → painted
  3. We _____ (visit) the zoo → visited
  4. They _____ (dance) together → danced
